MELANIE TESTA AND THE COLOURS

Ho trascorso il fine settimana a Lugano, partecipando a due seminari organizzati da Marlis Egger per TexArtAcademy.
Entrambi sono stati animati da Melanie Testa che nei quattro giorni a disposizione ci ha spiegato le tecniche  per colorare le stoffe col monoprint e con la cera di soia.
I've spent the weekend in Lugano, taking part in two workshops organized by Marlis Egger for Textilart Academy. Both were run by Melanie Testa, who explained us the monoprint and soywax techniques to colour fabrics during the four days.

i colori procion, accompagnati dalle stoffe, dagli stamps, dai pennelli, dai rulli, dalla cera di soia.

e le nostre mani, nonostante avessimo i guanti, alla fine erano così, belle colorate.

Ci sono stati parecchi momenti che hanno caratterizzato queste giornate.....

il più complicato - capire tutte le spiegazioni in lingua inglese

il più silenzioso - sono stati due o tre i momenti di grande silenzio, quando tutte noi eravamo così impegnate coi nostri lavori, da creare un silenzio assoluto

il più incredulo - essere riuscita a recuperare un pezzo che già avevo buttato nella spazzatura

There were many key moments during the day...

the most complicated - understanding all the explanations in English

the most silent - there were about two or three silent moments, when we were all like this

working and so busy - that we created a complete silence

the most unbelieving - when I was able to find a piece I had thrown away

il più stupefacente - accorgermi che anche io so usare i colori colorati e non solo nero e marrone

the most astonishing - realizing I can use coloured colours and not black and brown only

il più curioso - rendersi conto che anche le mosche non osavano disturbare

the most curious - realizing that even flies didn't want to disturb us

il più rilassante - la sera trascorsa tra chiacchiere e cibo

il più emozionante - l'ultimo giorno verso le 4 del pomeriggio. Eravamo sedute attorno a Melanie        

parlavamo di colori e di quanto una persona debba provare e riprovare senza stancarsi se vuole riuscire in quello che si era prefissata

il più triste - riporre tutto e salutarci

the most relaxing - the evening spent among chats and food 

the most touching - on the last day at about 4 pm. We were sitting around Melanie, talking     

about colours and how much a person has to try and try again without losing hope if she/he wants to succeed

the most sad - putting everything away and say bye-bye

e poi sulla strada del ritorno con le amiche italiane, si sa ci si scambiano le impressioni, il commento è stato unanime "Bellissimo, Melanie è stata proprio super!"

and then on the way back with the Italian friends, we were talking about this experience, and the unanimous comment was 'Amazing, Melanie was really great!'

TANTA RABBIA, TANTA AMAREZZA, UN CAFFE', UNA CONFERENZA E UNA TORTA + TUTTI QUEI MOMENTI QUOTIDIANI CHE RIEMPIONO LA NOSTRA VITA DI DONNE ecco un po' di ingredienti del mio 15 ottobre.

And which ones have been YOURS?

Non vi è mai capitato di dire.........."adesso esco e mi bevo un buon caffè e poi si vedrà".
A me è capitato ieri, un po' di amarezza, un po' di rabbia e poi un caffè al bar dove il barista ti conosce e sa che lo vuoi ristretto, amaro, che ti lasci in bocca un gusto che accompagnato da un buon profumo ti risolleva.
Al ritorno mi è venuta la voglia di fare una torta e adesso vi do la ricetta.
E' la TORTA PAESANA o TORTA DI PANE molto conosciuta qui in Brianza, è stata inventata tanti anni fa per poter usare il pane raffermo senza buttarlo.
Attualmente oltre al pane si aggiungono biscotti e altre dolcezze, non è più considerata povera e viene fatta in autunno quando arriva il primo freddo.

Have you ever said…… “I’ll go out, I drink a coffee and then we’ll see”?!

It happened to me yesterday. A little bit of sorrow, then a coffee at the usual bar, where the bartender knows you and knows that you want a very short coffee, without sugar, leaving a taste in you mouth able to raise you (and your mood).

When I came back I wanted to make a cake and now I give you the recipe.

It’s PAESANA (country) CAKE or BREAD CAKE. It a must here in Brianza and it was created many years ago to re-use the stale bread instead of throwing it away.

Nowadays we add (besides bread) biscuits and other sweets. It’s not considered “poor” anymore and it’s made in autumn when the first cold days come.

INGREDIENTI : INGREDIENTS
1 litro di latte - 1l of milk
5 panini raffermi a pezzettini - 5 little breads (divided into pieces)
250 gr amaretti spezzettati - 250 g of broken amaretto (biscuit)

250 gr biscotti secchi oppure i pezzetti di biscotti rotti - 250 g of biscuits (or pieces of them)
50 gr burro fuso - 50 g of melted butter
50 gr uvetta - 50 g of raisins
50 gr cacao amaro - 50 g of bitter cocoa

50 gr pinoli - 50 g of pine nuts
100 gr zucchero - 100 g of sugar

due cucchiai di rum - two spoons of rum
scorza tritata di un limone - minced lemon peel
un uovo intero e un pizzico di sale - 1 egg and a little bit of salt

Mettere il pane e i biscotti nel latte ben caldo e lasciarli per 2 ore mescolando di tanto in tanto
Mettere l'uvetta a bagno in acqua tiepida per mezz'ora
Amalgamare bene il pane e i biscotti, aggiungere l'uvetta dopo averla strizzata molto bene, e poi aggiungere gli altri ingredienti, mescolare tutto fino ad ottenere un impasto un po' granuloso.

put bread and biscuits into hot milk and leave them there for 2 hours, mixing them sometimes.

Put raisings into lukewarm water for about 30 minutes.

Amalgamate bread and biscuits very well, add raisings (after squeezing them). Then add the other ingredients. Mix very well ‘till you have a nubby mixture.

Tenete a parte un po' di pinoli da mettere sopra.
Imburrare una tortiera oppure foderarla con la carta forno e infornare per 45 minuti in forno già caldo a 180°.

Remember to take some pine nuts, that you’ll add above the cake at the end.

Butter a cake tin or put some ovenpaper.

Oven for 45 minutes (the oven has to be already warm – temperature: 180°).

Fare la prova di cottura infilando uno stuzzicadenti, se è pulito la torta è pronta.

Lasciate raffreddare e mangiate con gusto.

Check if it’s ready with a toothpick. If it remains clean it means the cake is ready.

Let the cake chill and then enjoy!

Mentre il pane e i biscotti erano nel latte caldo, ieri sera sono andata ad una relazione - dibattito che la dott. Convertino ha tenuto nell'ambito di Ottobre Rosa e senza che me l'aspettassi mi ha invitato a parlare del nostro Quilting Day e delle donne legate al patchwork.

All'inizio, non essendo preparata, ero un po' imbarazzata ma poi tutto è andato liscio e ho ricevuto un caloroso applauso che naturalmente giro a voi.

E qualcosa bolle in pentola per il prossimo anno.

Last night, while bread and biscuits were in the hot milk, I went to a report/discussion hold by doc. Convertino in the occasion of Pink October. Without expecting anything, she invited me to talk about Quilting day and women related to patchwork. At the very beginning I was a bit embarrassed – I wasn’t prepared to this! – but then everything was alright. I received a warm applause, that I want to turn to you.

And something is boiling for next year.

Al ritorno ho ultimato la torta che si è un po' rotta ma che è venuta proprio buona.

When I came back I finished the cake. It broke a bit, but it’s really tasty.

NADINE E VENEZIA --- NADINE AND VENICE

Non amo molto il Carnevale, ma penso che il Carnevale di Venezia 2009 lo ricorderò per sempre come un evento importante, felice e allegro.
Infatti proprio a Venezia ho incontrato un' amica di blog, Nadine , una quilter belga che mi aveva lasciato dei commenti più di due anni fa e con la quale sono rimasta sempre in contatto.
Nadine aveva deciso da un po' di mesi di venire a Venezia e mi aveva avvisato per organizzare questo incontro e così è avvenuto.
Ero un po' emozionata ed ansiosa (avevo paura per la lingua diversa che parliamo) ma poi quando l'ho vista l'ansia se ne è andata (lei parla benissimo l'italiano, grazie a suo marito che è italiano) e abbiamo cominciato a chiaccherare e a raccontarci un po' della nostra vita e del nostro patchwork.
I don't like Carnival that much, but I really think that I will always remember 2009 Venice Carnival as an important, happy and funny event.
I've met a friend from my blog in Venice, Nadine , a Belgian quilter ho wrote me some comments more than 2 years ago and since then we have always kept in touch.
Nadine told me some months ago she was going to come to Venice and asked me to organize our meeting.
I was a bit excited and nervous (Iwas worried about our different languages) but when I've seen her everything was gone (she speaks perfect Italian, thanks to her husband who is Italian) and we started talking and telling each other everything about our lives and our patchwork.

and then we walked and talked for hours..........

Nadine was with her husband, Gaetano. He is really nice too.................

e con me mio marito Piero e mia figlia Isabella con l' amica Chiara.
and with me there were my husband Piero and my daughter Isabella with her friend Chiara.

Abbiamo camminato tanto, chiaccherato tanto...........è stata una giornata felice circondata da tanta allegria. Ho avuto la sensazione di aver sempre conosciuto Nadine.
Ci siamo date un nuovo appuntamento in Val d'Argent e chissà se incontreremo anche altre quilters-bloggers.
We have been walking and chatting so much.........it's been such a happy day surrounded by a lot of fun. I felt like I've always knew Nadine.
We have decided that our next meeting will be in Val d'Argent and maybe we will meet other quilters-bloggers too.
