Anna Frank morì di tifo nel campo di concentramento di Bergen-Belsen nel 1945, non ancora sedicenne.

UFO e PAROLE --- UFO and WORDS

La corsa per finire il mio UFO (uno dei miei UFO) prosegue senza intoppi.

The run towards the end of my UFO (well, one of my UFOs) goes on without problems.

Intanto ho scelto la parola che mi accompagnerà durante il 2012. La parola è OLTRE.
OLTRE perché....perchè vorrei non limitarmi nelle mie scelte, nei miei rapporti con gli altri,
nel mio avvicinarmi a nuove avventure.
La scelta è stata complicata, avevo pensato a DOLCEZZA, sempre nei rapporti con gli altri,
poi avevo pensato a MOVIMENTO ma in realtà per seguire questa parola avrei dovuto cambiare totalmente.
Voi quale avreste scelto? Nel banner a sinistra ho messo un sondaggio e se volete rispondere vedremo cosa pensa ciascuna di voi.

In the meanwhile I've picked the word that will be my motto throughout 2012: the word is BEYOND.

BEYOND because... I'd like to not to have limits in my choices, in my relationships with other people, in getting closer to new adventures.

The choice was difficult. First I was thinking about SWEETNESS, always thinking about relationships with others, then I picked MOVEMENT, but to follow this word I should have changed completely.

DOPO NATALE --- AFTER CHRISTMAS

La ghirlanda che illuminava il presepe è finita in una scatola,

il presepe è stato riposto,

e Gesù Bambino e gli angioletti sono al calduccio in un cassetto,

la tavola e i pranzi delle feste sono un dolce ricordo che però mi ha un po' appesantito.

e una sana "poltroneria" si è impossessata della mia casa.

Poi questa mattina ho ricevuto questa mail:

"Mi sembri un po' pigra non scrivi più sul blog !!!!"

e poi sto sistemando le mille idee che mi frullano per testa. Dopo la realizzazione di "Bosco per sognare" ci vuole un nuovo progetto. Ce l'ho in mente ma non posso dirvi di più.

I have it in my mind, but I cannot tell you more.

Col libro/quaderno, che contiene gli schemi per riprodurre il bosco, siamo riuscite ad aiutare due associazioni che sostengono i bimbi ammalati e speriamo di aver contribuito a farli sorridere.

With the books, which contain the schemes to recreate the wood, we were able to help two Associations taking care of sick children and we hope we were able to make them smile.

Per iniziare il 2012 con un po' di positività, ho deciso di donare due libri/quaderni a chi scriverà qui sotto un commento. Un libro per una quilter italiana e un libro per una quilter straniera. Il 20 gennaio sarà l'ultimo giorno disponibile per partecipare.

IL CAPPOTTO RIVOLTATO --- TURNED INSIDE OUT COAT

Stavo applicando le toppe ad un vecchio golfino al quale mia figlia è molto affezionata e poiché avevo appena letto i blog del gruppo organizzato da Nadia, che tutti i martedì pubblicano i lavori che stanno preparando, o gli ufo che stanno finendo per Natale, la mia memoria ha cominciato a camminare a ritroso ed è arrivata al lontano Natale del 1961.

I was sewing some patches on my daughter's favorite sweater just after reading the blogs by Nadia's group, which uploads every Tuesday new projects they are working at, or the ufo they are preparing for Christmas, thus my mind started going back to Christmas 1961.

Me lo ricordo benissimo, avevo 12 anni.
Era Novembre e mia mamma che faceva la sarta, ogni tanto mi chiamava dicendo "Linda vieni che ti devo misurare".
Mi piaceva sentire le sue mani che col centimetro mi sfioravano e poi guardarle mentre scrivevano sulla pagina di un quaderno "le misure".
Vedevo che stava lavorando e cucendo un cappotto di mio papà che era grigio scuro all'esterno e verde scuro all'interno.
Un giorno mi disse di cercare in un sacco, dove lei teneva i ritagli di stoffa, e di prendere alcuni pezzettini di pelliccia grigia.
Erano pezzettini piccolissimi, insomma erano dei ritagli.
Ad un certo punto il cappotto grigio non lo vidi più, mia mamma ogni tanto mi diceva se la potevo aiutare per misurare un cappotto che stava facendo per una bambina e che era verde.
Mi piaceva fare da manichino, mi mettevo sopra uno sgabello ed ero bravissima quando mi diceva "alza il braccio, piega il braccio, gira adagio adagio che devo vedere se l'orlo è diritto".
Intanto i giorni passavano e dopo un po' non vidi più neppure il cappotto della bambina.
Mi ricordo che la vigilia di Natale del 1961 andai a letto presto perché arrivava Gesù Bambino, la mamma mi disse che lo avrebbero aspettato lei e mio papà che nel frattempo avrebbe preparato il presepe e che al mattino avrei trovato il presepe e il regalo.
Il mattino seguente era Natale e mi alzai presto coi miei fratelli, ognuno aveva un regalo.
Il mio era un pacco grosso avvolto in una carta marrone e legato con una cordicella.
Apro il pacco e trovo un cappotto "nuovo" bellissimo, con la cintura e con la pelliccia grigia sul collo e attorno alle tasche. Ero felicissima e non avevo capito che era il cappotto che avevo provato.
A marzo del 1962 mio papà è morto e io avevo il suo cappotto.
Mia mamma l'aveva rivoltato e poi per renderlo più bello aveva cucito insieme tutti i ritagli di una pelliccia. Tutto questo l'ho saputo e capito dopo tanto tempo.
Poi si è trasformato ancora, quando sono diventata un po' robusta, è sparita la cintura e poi è diventato una gonna e poi ancora le "pattine" che tanti anni fa si mettevano sotto le scarpe per non rovinare la cera sui pavimenti.
Questa è la storia del mio "cappotto rivoltato".

I remember it clearly, I was 12.

It was November and my mum was a tailor. Sometimes she called me saying 'Linda, please come, because I have to measure you'. I loved feeling her hands while she was measuring with the tape measure and then see them writing on a notebook.

I saw her working and sewing my dad's old coat, which was dark gray outside and dark green inside.

One day she asked me to look in a sack where she used to keep small pieces of fabric and pick some pieces of gray fur. They were really small pieces, just scraps.

One day the gray coat disappeared, my mum sometimes used to ask me if I could help her measuring the coat she was making for a little girl and it was gray.

I loved playing the part of the tailor's dummy, I stood on a stool and I was so talented when she used to tell me 'lift the arm, bend the arm, turn slowly as a dancer because I need to check the hem'.

The days were passing and after a while I didn't see the girl's coat anymore.

I remember that on 1961 Christmas Eve I went to bed early because I was waiting for Baby Jesus, my mum told me my dad and her would have waited for him while preparing the crib and that on the next day I would have found the crib and the present.

On the next day my brother, my sister and I woke up early and everyone found a gift.

Mine was a huge pack covered with brown paper.

I opened it and found a wonderful 'new' coat, with the belt and the gray fur around the neck and the pockets. I was so happy and I didn't realize it was the coat my mum made me try.

In March 1962 my dad died and I had his coat.

My mum had turned it inside out and to make it prettier she sewed together all the small pieces of fur. I realized this after a long time.

Then it was transformed again, when I became a bit big, the belt disappeared, then it became a skirt and then 'pattine', which are pieces of fabrics used in the past to walk on pavements in order not to ruin the wax.

This is the story of my 'turned inside out coat'.

MELANIE TESTA AND THE COLOURS

Ho trascorso il fine settimana a Lugano, partecipando a due seminari organizzati da Marlis Egger per TexArtAcademy.
Entrambi sono stati animati da Melanie Testa che nei quattro giorni a disposizione ci ha spiegato le tecniche per colorare le stoffe col monoprint e con la cera di soia.
I've spent the weekend in Lugano, taking part in two workshops organized by Marlis Egger for Textilart Academy. Both were run by Melanie Testa, who explained us the monoprint and soywax techniques to colour fabrics during the four days.

I protagonisti sono stati loro, I COLORI

e poi sulla strada del ritorno con le amiche italiane, si sa ci si scambiano le impressioni, il commento è stato unanime "Bellissimo, Melanie è stata proprio super!"

and then on the way back with the Italian friends, we were talking about this experience, and the unanimous comment was 'Amazing, Melanie was really great!'

VI RACCONTO UN SEGRETO --- I TELL YOU A SECRET

mi piace moltissimo ascoltare e raccogliere quelle che vengono definite favole o credenze che (secondo me) contengono sempre un po' di verità e ho pensato di condividere con voi un po' dei segreti e delle favole che ho sentito durante le mie vacanze in giro per l'Italia.

Per questo, oggi vi racconto un segreto ........
il segreto del Lago di Carezza o meglio la favola del lago di Carezza.

Gli amanti della montagna la conoscono e sanno perché le acque del piccolo laghetto di Carezza sono così colorate e riflettono tutti i colori e non solo i verdi e i blu come le acque dei laghi di montagna.
Il laghetto di Carezza si trova incastonato tra le cime delle Dolomiti in Alto Adige ai piedi della catena del Latemar. Le sue acque sono sorgive e durante il disgelo raggiungono la loro maggiore altezza.

Ma perché questi colori?

Perché nel lago viveva una bellissima ninfa, che spesso si sedeva sulle sponde a cantare.
Era molto timida e appena qualcuno si avvicinava, si rituffava nell'acqua.
Un giorno passò lì vicino lo stregone di Masarè che sentì la ninfa cantare.
Se ne innamorò perdutamente e tentò di rapirla facendo ricorso a tutte le sue arti magiche.
La strega Langverga gli diede allora questo consiglio
"Distendi un arcobaleno dal Latemar fino al lago, così stuzzicherai la curiosità della ninfea e la attirerai fuori dall'acqua.
Tu però dovrai trasformarti in un vecchio mercante e raccontarle che dal tessuto dell'arcobaleno si ottengono preziosissimi gioielli.
Quando lei si sarà avvicinata abbastanza, potrai rapirla senza difficoltà".
Lo stregone seguì il suggerimento ma dimenticò di trasformarsi.
La ninfa lo riconobbe e subito si rituffò nel lago scomparendo per sempre.
Lo stregone, infuriato, strappò l'arcobaleno dal cielo e lo scagliò in acqua. Ma questo naturalmente si sciolse spandendo i suoi colori sulla superficie del lago che da allora i ladini(abitanti della valle) chiamano "Lec de Ergobardo", lago arcobaleno.

I really love listening to and collecting what is usually defined as fairytale or belief, that (according to me) always hide a bit of truth.

So I thought of sharing with you some secrets and some fairytales I heard during my holidays around Italy.

So, today I'd like to tell you a secret...

The secret of Lake Carezza (carezza = caress) or better the fairytale of Lake Carezza.

Those who like the mountains know it already and know the reason why the water of the small Lake Carezza are so colourful and mirror all the colours, not only green and blue as all other lakes on the mountains do.

Lake Carezza sets among Dolomiti's peaks in Alto Adige at the feet of Latemar chain. Its has spring water and during thaw they reach the highest level.

Why all these colors ?

Because there used to be a beautiful nymph living in the lake. She used to sit on its banks and sing.

She was really shy and as soon as someone got closer she immediately plunged into the water.

One day a wizard, Masarè, passed by and heard the nymph singing.

He fell crazily in love with her and tried to kidnap her by using his magic tricks.

The witch Langverga gave him this advice.

"Spread a rainbow from Latemar to the lake. You will be able to stir her curiosity and make her come out of the water. But don't forget to turn yourself into an old merchant and tell her that from the rainbow fabric you can create amazing jewelry.

When she's close enough, you will be able to kidnap her easily."

The wizard followed the advice but forgot to turn himself into a merchant.

The nymph recognized him and immediately she plunged into the water for ever.

The wizard, furious, decided to tear the rainbow away from the sky and threw it into the water. It melt down spreading its colours on the lake's surface. Since then ladini (name of the people living in that valley) call it "led de ergobando", rainbow lake.

Lo scorso fino settimana a Bergamo c'era Creattiva, la fiera della creatività. Non ho foto perché mi sono dimenticata la macchina fotografica (e questo fatto mi preoccupa un pochino).

Ho incontrato tante amiche che non vedevo più da tempo e tra queste Daniela Dancelli, una quilters che per motivi famigliari aveva abbandonato per un po' di anni il patchwork.

Last weekend, in Bergamo, there was Creattiva, the fair of creativity. I don't have pictures as I forgot to bring my camera (and this fact makes me worry a bit).

I met a lot of friends I haven't seen for a while. Among them also Daniela Dancelli, a quilter who had to leave patchwork behind for family reasons.

She's now back on track and starting from Houston with a quilt and a book dedicated to 40 artists from all over the world.

QUILTING DAY LOMBARDIA

Il 2 Ottobre 2011 a Mantova, tante quilters si sono ritrovate per il 6° Quilting day della Lombardia e c'ero anch'io. Per la prima volta ho partecipato al QD della mia regione come iscritta e non come organizzatrice, all'inizio la situazione mi sembrava un po' strana ma poi tutto ok e vedendo il gruppo di Mantova che correva per soddisfare le nostre richieste, mi sono sentita anche riposata.
Comunque a parte queste miei pensieri...

On the 2nd October 2011 many quilters arrived in Mantua for the 6th Quilting day of Lombardy and I was there too. For the first time I attended the QD of my region as a participant and not as the organizer. In the beginning the situation sounded a bit weird to me, but then everything was fine and seeing the group of Mantua running here and there to please our requests made me feel also rested.

Anyway, aside from these thoughts...

Domenica mattina, nel bellissimo Convento di San Francesco,
le socie della Quilt Italia Lombardia e altre socie provenienti da diverse regioni italiane, hanno partecipato al QD organizzato dal gruppo L'Ago di Manto in collaborazione con la nostra delegata Daniela Cassani.

On Sunday morning, in the beautiful Choister of St Francis,

the members of Quilt Italia Lombardy and other members coming from other Italian regions, attended the QD organized by the group L'Ago di Manto in collaboration with our delegate Daniela Cassani.

La location era bellissima e l'organizzazione è stata perfetta.
Ci sono stati tutti gli ingredienti necessari per rendere la giornata piacevole.
Le chiacchiere, le amiche, i quilts.
The location was amazing and the organization perfect.
There were all the essential ingredients for an enjoyable day-
Chatting, friends, quilts.

una campanella che ci ha richiamato verso l'ottimo cibo mantovano,
a bell calling us for the tasty food of Mantua,

i gadgets,
gadgets,

le pezze che cucite insieme,

patches that sewn together,

hanno fatto nascere tanti "fior di loto"
gave birth to a lot of "water lilies"

che unite formeranno due quilts che saranno donati ai frati che ci hanno ospitato per aiutare la mensa dei poveri che ha sede proprio nel convento.

Durante la giornata abbiamo presentato "Un bosco per sognare".

A Tremosine, per la mostra di Nicoletta che è la quilter che per il matrimonio del figlio ha cucito 120 piccoli quilts-bomboniera.
To Tremosine, for the exhibition of Nicoletta, who is the quilter who sewed 120 mini quilts-bomboniera for her son's wedding.

Per arrivare da lei abbiamo percorso una strada scavata tra le rocce, poi abbiamo ammirato i suoi quilts, il lago, il piccolo paesino, i fiori del suo giardino dal quale ti viene la voglia di tuffarti nel lago...
To get to her we had to drive through a street dug into the rocks, then we stared at her quilts, the lake, the small village, the flowers in her garden, from which you feel like diving into the lake...

e abbiamo sognato guardando questo casale.

Infatti dopo Tremosine sono andata alla mostra organizzata da Quilt Italia a Chiesa in Valmalenco.
E anche qui, quilts, fiori, funghi e chiacchiere e una bellissima casa per sognare.
E si perchè quando sono con le mie amiche fantastichiamo e pensiamo di acquistare un casale per organizzare corsi patchwork, mostre di quilts, serate attorno al fuoco e condivisione di tanti segreti patchwork e no.
E' solo un sogno ma vi faccio una domanda........"tra i casali sotto in quale vorreste passare una settimana-quilt?

Acquamarina è il titolo della mostra che si è tenuta la scorsa settimana all'Isola d'Elba.
Da qualche anno le "Quilters dell'Elba" mi invitavano e lo scorso fine settimana ho deciso che dovevo andare.
Era dal 2005, l'anno di Elba Patchwork, che non tornavo sull'isola dove avevo conosciuto la maggior parte delle socie di Quilt Italia e dove, posso dire, di aver ho fatto il mio ingresso ufficiale nel mondo delle pezze.
Dal traghetto, Portoferraio e la Torre della Linguella (sede della mostra) mi hanno salutato quasi venendomi incontro.
Seawater is the title of the last week exhibition at Isola d'Elba.
For the last few years the "Quilters dell'Elba" have been inviting me, and last weekend I decided to go.

It was since 2005, the year of Elba Patchwork, that I hadn't been going on the island, where I met la majority of Quilt Italia members.

I can say that at Elba I made my official entrance in the patch world.

From the ferry, Portoferrario and Torre della Linguella (hosting the exhibition) they have been waving as they were coming to meet me.

Ma era sera, eravamo un po' stanchi perchè a causa della coda in autostrada e all'imbarco, il viaggio era durato più di 10 ore, dovevamo cercare un albergo e perciò io e mio marito abbiamo rimandato la visita ai quilts al mattino seguente.

But it was evening and we were tired because the journey took us more than 10 hours, as there was traffic on the road and the boarding was really long. We had to look for an hotel,

so my husband and I decided to go and meet the quilters the next morning.

Ci siamo addormentati con un mare scuro scuro e ci siamo svegliati con un bellissimo mare azzurro.
We fell asleep with a dark sea and woke up with a wonderful blue sea.

Il mattino seguente, mi presento in libreria da Anna che mi guarda stupita, infatti tre giorni prima le avevo mandato una mail dicendole che anche quest'anno non sarei potuta andare.
The morning after I went into Anna's bookshop who was surprised. In fact, three days before I had sent an email saying that even this year I wasn't able to go.

e poi la mostra, la location era importante e i quilts esposti molto belli e ben ambientati nella torre sul mare.

Erano divisi su due piani. Al primo i lavori che le amiche dell'Elba hanno cucito durante questo ultimo anno tra i quali c'era il lavoro di gruppo messo in palio alla lotteria.
There were two floors. At the first, works that the friends of Elba sewed during the last year, among which there was the quilt of a group which was then put up as a prize at the lottery.

Dopo aver girovagato per l'isola per il resto della giornata, alla sera tra le luci che si riflettevano nel mare ho salutato le amiche.
After going around the island for the rest of the day, in the evening, while the lights were shining on the sea, I said bye bye to my friends.

Il giorno seguente col traghetto delle 7.30 sono ripartita guardando il sole che sorgeva e illuminava il mare

con le mani dei bimbi che mi erano rimaste ho preparato questo quilt .

l mese di Agosto si sta concludendo e anche le mie ferie trascorse tra Pezze e Pezzi di Italia, si sono concluse.
Ho tantissime foto di mostre patchwork che ho visitato, di angoli di Italia e di un mio lavoro che ho iniziato.
Nel frattempo vi lascio ascoltare il concerto di cicale che mi ha accompagnato
mentre attraversavo la pineta di Cecina per andare al mare a fare una pensierosa passeggiata. Non sono state zitte un attimo.

Guardando il lago, un po' cupo, mentre camminavo lentamente verso la Biblioteca di Laveno Mombello, mi veniva in mente "Piccolo Mondo Antico" di Antonio Fogazzaro uno dei romanzieri che con le loro parole ci hanno spesso emozionato.
Looking at the lake while I was slowly walking towards the Library of Laveno Mombello, I was thinking of 'Piccolo Mondo Antico' (Ancient Little World) by Antonio Fogazzaro, one of those novelists that have often been able to move us with their words.

Andavo ad ammirare i "quilts letterali" creati da otto quilters italiane che leggendo o sentendo le parole di alcune poesie o di alcune canzoni, hanno deciso di fermare la loro emozione creando un quilt.
I was going to see the "literal quilts" created by eight Italian quilters who reading or hearing some poems or songs, decided to trap that emotion in a quilt.

E' lo strumento del mio nuovo sport, anzi di uno sport che praticavo da bambina e che ora ho ripreso....
un indizio ve lo avevo già dato nel post che avevo fatto subito dopo le mie vacanze di maggio e ora aggiungo che c'è ci gioca a tennis e ha la racchetta, c'è chi gioca a golf e ha le mazze, c'è che gioca a calcio e ha il pallone.

Io ho questa scatolina che misura 21 x 5 cm.

Perchè ieri 2 luglio si è inaugurata presso il Museo della Ceramica di Cerro di Laveno, la mostra Afghanistan Inspirations organizzata da Daniela Cassani.
That's because yesterday, 2nd July, there was the opening of the Afghanistan Inspirations exhibition at the Ceramic Museum of Cerro di Laveno organized by Daniela Cassani.

Dopo i discorsi di apertura abbiamo varcato il grande portone per ammirare le opere in mostra.

Mentre passeggiavo tra le piante del Giardino Botanico Ravino a Ischia

vedo, in un'area recintata, questo magnifico pavone che faceva la ruota.

I saw, in a closed area, this magnificent Peacock who was doing the wheel.

Ma dopo una partita a scacchi

vedo appoggiato su una panchina

Vedo cuori ovunque.....cosa vorrà dire?

Ero in un ristorante e mi hanno portato il pane a forma di cuore.

I see hearts everywhere... What could this mean?

I was in a restaurant and they brought me heart-shaped bread.

Stavo andando in auto in una strada piena di buche e dopo un po' mi è sembrato di vedere un cuore,

ho accostato, sono scesa e poichè ho sempre la macchina fotografica nella borsa.... clic ed ecco la buca a forma di cuore.

I was driving on a road full of potholes and after a while I thought I'd seen a heart,

I pulled over, I got off and - as I always have my camera in the bag - click and there it is, the heart-shaped pothole.

Nella coppia le donne fanno la differenza.

Il presidente degli Stati Uniti, Barak Obama, decide di andare a cena fuori con la moglie Michelle e,

volendo fare qualcosa di diverso e fuori dalla routine, la porta in un normale ristorante e non, come al solito, in uno di lusso.

During the "show and tell" the ladies were counting the 5600 squares of the Anna's quilt.

Queste sono le mie stoffe tinte colorate come il gruppo e vivaci come i giorni che ho passato. Silvia ci ha salutato dicendo "il bello del patchwork è che poi ci si incontra e si sta insieme".

These are my coloured fabrics coloured like the group and happy like the days that I passed.

Silvia greeted us by saying "the beauty of the patchwork is that we can meet and stay together".

Tanti anni fa c'era un'officina, la porta era un po' grigia, e dentro si riparavano automobili

Many years ago there was a repair shop, the door was a bit grey, and they used to repair cars

poi il proprietario si è ritirato e l'officina è diventata un laboratorio di ceramica e

si è vivacizzato con la creatività di Mariafrancesca e Sara.

Il suo nome è "La tana delle costruzioni".

then the owner retired and that became a ceramic shop, full of colours thanks to the creativity of Mariafrancesca and Sara.

Its name is "La tana delle costruzioni" (The den of constructions).

E' qui che domenica 5 giugno,si è inaugurata la mostra "Tessuti per raccontare" di Daniela Cassani.

Is here that on Sunday 5th June, there was the great opening of the exhibition "Tessuti per raccontare" (Fabrics to narrate) by Daniela Cassani.

Daniela ha scelto questa laboratorio e l'ha colorato con le sue casette,

e con l'ultimissimo lavoro nel quale ha unito stoffa e ceramica raku.

Questa frase di Daniela è il filo conduttore che l'ha spinta ad organizzare questa mostra, un filo che continuerà a cucire e a creare ancora e ancora e ancora.

These words by Daniela are the leading thread that made her organise this exhibition, a thread that will keep on sewing and creating again and again and again.

Le vacanze sono terminate e adesso finalmente un po' di riposo e un po' di chiacchiere insieme. Innanzitutto devo fare i complimenti alle amiche di Quilt Italia Gruppo Lombardia che hanno partecipato ad alcuni concorsi e che hanno vinto coi loro quilts.

Papa Wojtyla è Beato.

Qui sotto l'emozione che ho provato nel 2005 quando l'ho visto all'improvviso davanti a me.

Ero con mio marito e oggi riparlandone lui ha detto"Linda devi ammettere che quando "Il Papa" è passato vicino a noi è passata un'emozione che con le parole non si può spiegare".

E' vero!

Below the emotion that I had in 2005 when I saw Him suddenly in front of me.

I was with my husband and today he said "Linda you must admit that when "The Pope"passed near us we realized that there were no words to explain that emotion."

It's true!

Era Marzo del 2005 e con mio marito mi ero recata a Roma per la mostra patchwork "l'arte di creare con le stoffe" organizzata da QUILT ITALIA e poi ci siamo trattenuti per qualche giorno. La domenica sera mentre eravamo sull'autobus che ci avrebbe riportato in albergo, il semaforo divenne rosso e rimase rosso per tanto tempo, c'erano due vigili in mezzo all'incrocio che non permettevano alle auto e ai bus di muoversi.

Tutti suonavano i clackson e la confusione era grande. Sull'autobus ci chiedevamo cosa potesse essere successo e dopo un po' poichè io e mio marito temevamo di perdere un altro bus che avremmo dovuto prendere più avanti, chiedemmo all'autista se ci poteva aprire e scendemmo per incamminarci a piedi.

Arrivati al semaforo rosso dovevamo attraversare una strada dove non c'era nessuno e che nel buio mi sembrava finisse con un cancello. Eravamo vicino alle Mura Vaticane e poichè era un po' tardi non c'era tanta gente a piedi. Un giovane sacerdote ci affiancò e scendemmo dal marciapiede.

In quel preciso momento arrivarono dalla via principale due poliziotti in moto che alzando il braccio verso di noi ci fermarono.

E subito vedemmo un'auto scura che si avvicinava adagio, il sacerdote vicino a noi disse con un filo di voce" ma è il Papa".

Si era Lui, che avevano dimesso dall'ospedale e ritornava in Vaticano dove sarebbe morto dopo pochi giorni.

Non mi ricordo il suo viso ma da allora ho spesso negli occhi il bianco del suo vestito e la sua mano che lasciata la maniglia alla quale si sorreggeva, fece il gesto della benedizione.

Era ad un metro da noi e in quel momento non ho sentito più nulla ero come in una nuvola.

L'emozione è durata un attimo ma è stata così intensa che sembrava non finire più.

Ci siamo ritrovati tutti e tre sul marciapiede con gli occhi colmi di lacrime e poi adagio adagio il rumore attorno a noi è ricominciato.

It was March, 2005, and I went to Rome with my husband for the patchwork exhibition "the art of creating with fabrics" a QUILT ITALIA show. We spent a few days there and on Sunday night while we were on the bus going back to the hotel, the traffic light turned into red and didn't change for a many minutes.

Two policemen were standing in the middle of the crossroad and cars and buses couldn't move.

There was a lot of confusion. Where asking each other what could have happened. After a while, my husband and I started walking to the stop of another bus we had to take, we didn't want to miss it.

As we reached the red traffic light, we had to cross a road where there was nobody and in the dark of the night it seemed to finish with a gate. We were close to the Vatican Wall. There were very few people, because it was late. A young priest was walking next to us and we went down from the platform.

In the meanwhile two policemen on two motorcycles came from the main street and said us to stop.

We saw a black car coming slowly, and the young priest said "that's the Pope!".

It was Him! Coming back from the Hospital and going to the Vatican, where he would have died after few days.

I can't remember his face, but since that moment I have sometimes in my eyes the white of his dress and his hand blessing us.

He was a meter far from us and I couldn't feel anything, it was like being in a cloud.

The emotion had been going on for a moment but that feeling seemed to last forever.

We found ourselves on the platform, with the eyes full of drops and then slowly the noise started again.

Sabato io e mio marito siamo andati a controllare e a prendere accordi per riparare i danni delle infiltrazioni che la neve ci ha causato.
Saturday, my husband and I went to check and to make arrangements to repair the damages that snow has caused us.

Era una giornata stupenda, io ero con una maglietta senza maniche per il caldo.

It was a beautiful day, I was wearing a sleeveless t-shirt as it was really warm.

Ho approfittato per spolverare le mie caffettiere (tutte nuove),

I took advantage of this to dust my coffee pots (all new),

i miei piattini e le bambole che erano delle zie di mio marito e che abbiamo trovato nella casa quando l'abbiamo risistemata.
my plates and dolls which were of my husband's aunts and that we found in the house when we renovated it.

A causa dei lavori di restauro 10 anni fa, anche un vecchio muretto era stato spostato e poi ricostruito, nelle fessure delle pietre aveva tante piantine che erano state rimosse e poi ricollocate ma per tutti questi anni tutto sembrava fermo e con piacere sabato abbiamo visto che invece le violette sono rifiorite. Rifioriranno sicuramente anche le altre.
Due to renovations (10 years ago), also an old wall was moved and rebuilt. In the small cracks of the stones there were many little plants that were removed and then replaced. For all these years everything seemed still and on Saturday we saw with pleasure that the violets blossomed again. The others will bloom again for sure.

al ritorno mi sono concessa un po' di frutta con un piccolo gelato.

Non preoccupatevi mangerò anche altro ma per un mese NIENTE DOLCI, PANE e PASTICCI.

Don't worry I'll eat other food too, but for a month NO SWEETS, BREAD and PATTIES.

Che bello quando una emozione ti prende e ti ricarica.
Ho imparato ad ascoltarle e a viverle quando arrivano e...quando arrivano così all'improvviso senza che te le aspetti sono bellissime.
Questa settimana la posta me ne ha recapitata una.
Ho ricevuto questo cuore ambientato in un bel giardino dalla carissima Marlis, era inaspettato, c'era stato uno scambio di frasi tra me e lei quasi un gioco, e perciò mi ha emozionato tanto.
How beautiful it is when an emotion catches and recharges you.

I've learnt to listen and live them whenever they come and...when they come so unexpected they are amazing.

This week I've found one in the post.

I've received this heart in a beautiful garden from Marlis, it was unexpected, there had been an exchange of ideas, just like a game, and so it touched me a lot.

Venerdì 18 Marzo era una bellissima giornata. Dopo tanti giorni di pioggia, un bel sole ci ha fatto compagnia mentre io e mio marito andavamo al "Maglio di Ghirla", un vecchio mulino ristrutturato che si trova in Valganna.
Friday 18th March was a wonderful day, after many rainy days, a nice sun was shining and keeping company to my husband and I, while we were going to 'Maglio di Ghirla', an old restructured watermill in Valganna.

Dopo il discorso di apertura durante il quale le orecchie sentivano ma gli occhi erano attratti dai colori dei quilts di Claudia, tanti già visti e tre nuovissimi,
After the opening speech, during which ears were hearing, but the eyes were concentrating on the colours of Claudia's quilts, many already seen and three brand new ones,

gli invitati si sono soffermati davanti ad ogni quilt osservandoli nei minimi particolari, incuranti del tempo che passava e della sera che ormai era scesa.
the guests stopped in front of each single piece observing all the small details, without caring of the passing time and the evening that had arrived.

I tre quilts nuovissimi sono l'Estate, l'Autunno e l'Inverno con i quali "Apeoperosa" ha concluso le stagioni iniziate con la Primavera, che aveva vinto il concorso"Primavera è nell'aria" organizzato da Quilt Italia nel 2009.
The three brand new quilts are 'Summer', 'Autumn' and 'Winter'. With them 'Apeoperosa' concluded the seasons she had started with 'Spring', created for the competition 'Spring is in the air' organised by Quilt Italia in 2009.

LA FESTA DEL TRICOLORE --- THE ITALIAN FLAG CELEBRATION

"La festa dei 150 anni del Tricolore".
L'Italia è in festa, sui palazzi istituzionali e sulle case private sventolano tante bandiere bianche, rosse e verdi e ieri camminando in una via del centro e vedendo tutte queste bandiere mi sono fatta questa domanda.
"QUANDO HO CAPITO CHE QUESTI TRE COLORI ERANO LA MIA BANDIERA?"
Ci ho pensato un po' ritornando indietro nel tempo e alla fine ho deciso che il mio primo ricordo risale a 55 anni orsono quando bambina di sei anni andavo in colonia al mare e tutte le mattine prima della colazione ci mettevano in fila attorno ad un pennone e si faceva l'alzabandiera cantando "Fratelli d'Italia".
Non mi piaceva quella cerimonia perchè ero piccola e potevo solo guardare e non girare la corda che faceva salire il Tricolore.
Mi dicevano "lo farai quando sarai più grande" ma quando sono diventata grande, lo facevano sempre i maschi.

Tornata a casa ho rivolto la stessa domanda ad alcuni parenti e amici e naturalmente le risposte sono state diverse ma simili secondo l'età delle persone che hanno risposto.

I più giovani mi hanno risposto alla scuola elementare.
Andando in su con l'età hanno legato la consapevolezza del Tricolore a qualche vittoria sportiva e in particolare ai mondiali di calcio.
Poi sempre salendo con gli anni le risposte si sono riferite alla "Festa del 4 Novembre" perchè a scuola regalavano una bandierina ad ogni bambino.

Le quattro risposte che mi sono piaciute di più sono state queste......

1)A cinque anni (ora 30) vedevo i cartoni animati coi robots giapponesi e c'era sempre la loro bandiera e allora sono andato a cercare come era la mia e ho visto che aveva tre colori e non due e mi è sembrata più bella.

2)A nove anni (ora 59) con la scuola sono andata a Torino per il Centenario della Bandiera, ho visto un progetto di treno su monorotaia e ci hanno fatto vedere un film in cinemascope e poi cantare l'Inno di Mameli e ogni bambino sventolava la bandierina e l'Italia mi è sembrata forte e potente.

3 )Mi ricordo benissimo che a tre anni (ora 66) andavo all'asilo e quando moriva qualche persona ricca ci vestivano tutti nello stesso modo e ci portavano al funerale e dovevamo camminare adagio dietro la bandiera e me la ricordo ancora adesso, in alto aveva un fiocco nero di velluto.

4)Non ho mai avuto la consapevolezza della Bandiera ma da un po' di anni (ora 60) VIVO LA BANDIERA PERCHE' MI SENTO ITALIANA.

Ora rivolgo a voi la domanda "QUANDO AVETE CAPITO CHE QUESTI TRE COLORI ERANO LA VOSTRA BANDIERA?" quando vi siete accorti (al di fuori della politica) che c'è una Bandiera uguale per tutti noi Italiani.

"The 150 years Italian flag celebration"

Italy is celebrating, on the institutional palaces and on the houses there are waving white, red and green flags. And yesterday, while I was walking in the centre, I saw all these flags and I asked myself:

'WHEN DID I UNDERSTAND THAT THOSE THREE COLOURS WERE MY FLAG?'

I thought about that, going back in my memories, and I found out that my first memory dates 55 years ago. I was 6 years old and I used to go to the summer camp to the seaside. Every morning before breakfast they made us stand around a mast, run the flag up and sing 'Fratelli d'Italia' (the Italian anthem.

I didn't like that ceremony because I was little and I could just stay there and see without pulling the rope of the flag.

The y used to tell me 'You'll do it when you'll be older', but when I grew up it was always the boys doing it. So I've never really run up the flag on the mast.

When I came back yesterday, I've asked some relatives and friends the same question, and of course the answers were different but similar at the same time, depending on the age of the person.

The youngest told me at elementary school.

Going up with the age, they told me that the awareness of the Italian flag was related to some sport competitions that had been won, especially football world cup.

Going up a bit more, the answers referred to '4th November celebration', because they used to receive a small flag as a gift at school.

The four answers I like the most are...

1)When I was 5 (now 30) I used to watch cartoons with Japanese robot and there was always their flag. So I looked up how mine was like and I saw that it had three colours and not two.

2)When I was 9 (now 59) I went to Turin with my class. We went fot the 100th Anniversary of the flag. I saw the project of a monorail train, watched a movie in CinemaScope, sang the Italian anthem and every child was waving a small flag.

3) I remember exactly when I was 3 years old (now 66), I used to go to the kindergarten and every time a rich person died, they made us dress in the same way, brought us to the funeral, we had to walk slowly following the flag. And I still remember it, made of velvet and on the top there was a big black bow.

4) I've never had the awareness of the flag but in the last years (now 60) I'VE BEEN LIVING THE FLAG BECAUSE I FEEL ITALIAN.

Now I'd like to ask you the same question 'WHEN DID YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THESE THREE COLOURS WERE YOUR FLAG?', when did you realise (without considering Politics) that there is a Flag... equal for all Italians?
