IL MIO NATALE --- MY CHRISTMAS

Donna , the organizer of SECRET CHRISTMAS SWAP, asked us to describe Christmas time in our country and home.........let me try.

In Italy each region has its own christmas traditions but there's one thing that is the same everywhere.....THE CRIB.
I think that in 90% of Italian houses there's a crib. There are cribs known all over the world like the one of Naples, of Puglia, of Sicily and more. In every church the oldest people, helped by the youngest, prepare a huge crib that will be there until the Epiphany sunday for the Family Day and..........in turistic places, expecially in the mountains, during christmas holidays, there's the living crib at night. It's so exiciting!
Since many years we have the christmas tree next to the crib.
Above you can see two pictures of an artistic crib in Naples, that my cousin Sandra, who lives there, has sent me.

In my home too we prepare the Tree and the Crib, or better saying two cribs. On made by me with jute and a traditional one with the classical little statues, that have to be of terracotta and absolutly not of plastic. We usually buy a new one each year (just one for two reasons: they cost a lot but expecially because it's a tradition that the crib have to be created time after time).
For the Christmas tree we prefer the wooden or ceramic or glass decorations.
We also have a small crib in our second house by the lake. It's a raku crib and it stands in a niche.

My daughter and I decorate the house while my husband and my son prepare the crib and the tree with the lights. Then we decorate the tree together, but this happens just two or three days before Christmas.

And now, the Christmas Day..........let me tell you the my husband and I are the only two married in our families and my kids are the only two nephews for our sisters and brother. That's why since 1975, year of our wedding, we spent the Christmas Day in our place. Then the married and not cousins and a aunt come.......we are about 20.
Sadly the grandparents are no more here, but it's like they still are.

The tradition of my region (Lombardy)is to celebrate Christmas during the lunch of the 25th and not during the dinner of the 24th as it happens in other regions. I start cooking on the 24th afternoon, I like cooking the starters and not buying them already done, that's why I'm always very busy.
Our menu is: VARIOUS STARTERS (a lot) - CAPPELLETTI WITH BROTH - MILANESE RISOTTO - STUFFED BOILED CAPPONE with MUSTARD - ROAST COCK with CARDOON..............and at the end the famous MILANESE PANETTONE that have to be absolutly TRADITIONAL, not stuffed, and while we cut it we usually turn off the lights and light the candels.

the in the afternoon.........
while we play BINGO we eat a lot of desserts. Our bingo lasts so long, until the final 'huge' BINGO, when there's just one price and obviously it's the most important.

But what I really like is the atmosphere, shopping during tha last days, the pipers, running form one place to another, the hidden presents, decorating, the MIDNIGHT MASS, the confusion while opening the boxes of the gifts and in the meanwhile outside there's a bit of fog or better it snows............it's WONDERFUL.
Six years ago during the night at Christmas Eve it started snowing.............

.........and the next morning view outside my window was this one............ everybody was late for that lunch but with the snow outside we felt closer one-another and warm inside.

ciao ciao a tutte

These are some moments about how I live the most beautiful and loved Feast of the year and this year while eating PANETTONE I will think of you, celebrating too, and my table will seem endless................
ciao ciao to everybody and

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL

What a lovely post. Here in Leicester they have a crib and nativity scene every year in a special 'stable' in the Town Hall Square. The figures are large and beautiful ... and made in ITALY.
