MALINCONIA --- MELANCHOLY

Did you ever feel that kind of melancholy that lasts not calm?!

I've been feeling like that for some days. I've decided it was the time to react and stop with my usual routine. On saturday and sunday my husband and I took two days of 'freedom' and despite the ugly weather I was able to leave all the negative thoughts behind.

-...No questa no perchè me l'hanno regalata!" e così mi trovo a non usarle e a ricomperarle.
Pazzesco!.

So full of energy I've decided to work on the Baltimora that I've decided to do with five friends.
The pattern is the same for everyone but the colours are different (you can choose the ones you prefer).
While I was choosing the fabrics I've realized I have a little mania and I would like to know if you have it too.
I have to many fabrics but when it comes the right time to use them I usually say: "...No, I can't use this one - ...Not this one, it's so old, I won't find it anymore! - ...Not this one because it's a present!" and so I always but new ones. Crazy!

These are the first pieces of my Baltimora.

Yes, I do believe that many of us quilters share the feeling of not wanting to use the fabric that we have in our stashes for the very reasons you described. I can't say that I understand why but I also experience this! Your applique work looks beautiful, so neat and well stitched. I've never done a Baltimore quilt but I admire them so much and hope that someday I will make time for a project like that. The one pictured on your blog is gorgeous.

Angie ha detto...

Oh, that Baltimore album is going to be gorgeous! And I too have that problem...too many fabrics...and WAY too many that I don't want to 'cut' for all of the reasons that you listed!! LOL I'm glad you're out from under the 'grey cloud' and feeling energetic and optimistic. :D

Looks like a fun project! I'll enjoy watching it progress.

I think we all have those fabrics that are just too great to use!!

I don't know a quilter who doesn't have the same thoughts about certain fabrics! I am trying to use my stash, but I am very attached to some of the pieces. Last year I visited my son in Okinawa, where I bought several wonderful Japanese fabrics. Those I may never be able to cut! I probably won't go back there, so how could I replace them?

Your Baltimore block is truly lovely!

I'm there with you on the subject of never being convinced that I have the right fabric to use at the time and feel as though I must go and get the exact right piece. It's a vicious cycle, isn't it? I hope the melancholy passes and there's bright and shining skies ahead, my friend!

I am glad that you are finished with your sad times and are happy again. Your Baltimore blocks are beautiful - I like all the layers. I sometimes have a hard time using old fabric, until I remember that I bought them just so I would use them. And they are more likely to be treated well when they are in a quilt, than they are just sitting on the shelf.

What lovely baltimore blocks - so cute! I just try to use all my stash fabrics .. well I said I try ... :-)))

I´m looking forward to the result!

Yes, you're right. There is always some excuse I make so that I don't use all my fabric. "I won't have it anymore!" Well, it will be on someone's wall, but anyway, it is still fun to buy more fabric. Your preparation for the applique looks very detailed! Looking forward to seeing your progress! Glad that your mood has changed.

I understand melancholia and a trip to a beautiful place with someone you love can certainly be good therapy!
I also sometimes buy fabric for therapy and it is cheaper than a trip. Because I mostly work on small projects I buy 1/4 yards. And then I feel better! But useing thefabric is fun too!

Your Baltimore squares are beautiful. It looks like a great project with friends.

Such a beautiful picture of the mountains. I can feel quite melancholy in January and February.

And as far as using the stash -- I think all quilter have a hard time with that, I don't know why, but I have a terrible time using fabric especially if it is wrapped in a ribbon -- LOL

What beautiful blocks you've created, love the fabrics you chose to use. As most have already said we all have that piece of fabric that we just can't cut into. I, fortunately don't have that problem. Most all the fabric I have I love, and I just love to see it transformed into a quilt.

Helen ha detto...

Lovely blocks. What method did you use to prepare your applique pieces?

A trip away is always good for the melancholia!

:)
voi come tagliate???

Great colour choices .... looking forward to seeing more! I'm the same with my fabric and especially when I do applique ... there is never the perfect fabric in my stash.

I will visit again to see the result !!! Grates Barbara

I love the colours you have choosen, and the blocks you have prepared looks wonderful!!!
I've also the same problem with fabrics, the only time is not problem to cut them is when I buy just for a project :))

Glad to hear the bad mood has passed! A change of pace is such a welcome thing sometimes. The album quilt is looking wonderful. I love the patterns. this will be beautiful!

I had to laugh at your post - I do that all the time - decide that I can't use fabrics I already own because I am saving them "for something special". This year, my resolution has been to use my fabrics when there is something appropriate, and not worry too much about them being gone because I have used them! Glad to know I am not the only person to do this.
